Tiberius,
I just don't know what I'm going to tell the Master. You remember the Dunmer I mentioned in my last letter? Darim Oloth? He was the fellow we caught stealing the silverware. Well he's escaped from our dungeon. And what's more, the cell he escaped from was still locked after he'd gone. Yes, you read that correctly. It defies explanation. There is absolutely no way he could have done it without the aid of magic, yet he was wearing bracers that prevent spellcasting. I just can't fathom how he did it. I haven't told the Master, of course. He'll be furious. I'm praying he doesn't get into one of his moods and feel like taking it out on his prisoners. Obviously I have to tell him eventually, but I've yet to work up the nerve. Plus I'm vainly hoping we can still solve the puzzle before then, but that's probably too much to ask.
It's like he walked through the walls or something. I mean, I've heard of many daring escapes in my time, but how many escapees lock the door behind them? It's possible he smuggled some form of pick in and managed to open the lock, but it would have taken a spell to relock the damned thing afterwards, which he couldn't have cast while still wearing those bloody bracers. What if he took the bracers off, you ask? Impossible. The only way to get those things off without the key is with either magic (which the bracers prevented him from using), or a hammer and chisel (which I can assure you were NOT in his cell). It couldn't have been done without someone creeping in and helping him, but the door to the dungeon was closed all night with a guard (whom I'd trust with my life) right outside. No one went in until morning, which was when we discovered the empty cell. I think it's most likely that he left the keep then -- he must have had an invisibility potion hidden on him (I shudder to think where, as he was thoroughly searched upon capture), which he used to slip out when the door was opened. But it still doesn't explain how he got out of the cell in the first place.
I tell you, trying to figure this out is driving me insane.
I wish my problems ended there. Last night two of my men reported hearing noises. Ghostly noises, inside the walls and under the floor. And what's more, they went and told the rest of the guards, so now everyone in the damned keep thinks it's haunted! I naturally rubbished the claims and rebuked them for being so childish, but I can't help thinking about what you and I saw that night in Necrom. It's probably not
[The letter ends here, unfinished.]
